Scroll through our History
The history of Scotmid Co-operative spans over 150 years. It began in a house in Grove Street, Edinburgh, in July 1859 where 12 men met with the purpose of forming a co-operative society, a practice which was becoming increasingly popular with poor choice and high prices common when dealing with the merchants of the day. The first St Cuthbert’s Co-operative Association shop opened on 4 November 1859 in Edinburgh, on the corner of Ponton Street and Fountainbridge. The Association had 63 members and capital of just over £30. St Cuthbert’s would go on to become Scotmid Co-operative as we know it today.
