Newmains Gala Day has been given a boost after receiving a community grant from Scotmid Co-operative.
The grant of £150 was awarded by Scotmid’s West Regional Committee, and will be used to pay for a horse and carriage to transport children along the parade route through the village.
Mary Gilfillan from Newmains Gala said: “I would like to thank Scotmid for helping with their kind donation. Each year we try our best to give the kids an experience they haven’t done before. The money donated by Scotmid will help go towards horse and carriages to carry the kids along the procession route around the village.”
Yvonne Goodfellow, Membership and Community Officer for Scotmid, presented the cheque to Newmains Gala at Scotmid’s Newmains store. She said: “The Newmains Gala Day brings the whole town together, and as a retailer at the heart of our local community, Scotmid is delighted to be able to help.”
The Gala Day, set to be held on 14 June, will include the gala day parade and entertainment for all of the family. Market stalls, a funfair, bouncy castle, live music, football matches, and dog displays are all planned for the day.
Scotmid donates around a quarter of a million pounds to local causes through its community grant scheme each year. Applications are encouraged for projects that support children and education, active lifestyles, the environment, health promotion, the elderly, homelessness, Fairtrade, arts and culture, and charity.
Community groups and projects can apply by completing a community grant form from their local Scotmid store or online at www.scotmid.coop. Community groups and projects must meet certain criteria to be considered for funding. The applications are then considered by their Regional Committee before being awarded.
