Getting up close with the Scotmid board and committee members continues with Jim Gilchrist, Scotmid Board & West Regional Committee member.

Jim G

Why (and how long ago) did you become a member of Scotmid?

Living in a village where the shops were co-operative groceries, butchers etc and coming from a family steeped in the co-operative movement, it seemed natural.  I was a member of Scotmid’s predecessors and I have been a member for 46 years.

How and why did you decide to become more actively involved?

When attending member meetings through the years, directors and committee members were always encouraging us to put our names forward for elections and become more involved.

What major changes have you seen in your time with Scotmid?

Undoubtedly in technology, communications, IT systems and ordering processes.

What’s been your proudest moment at Scotmid?

There have been many proud moments.  The acquisition of the two largest independent convenience retailers in Scotland and the merger of Scotmid with other societies are some which will go down in history and also the recent merger with Penrith co-operative which has taken the food business over the border. I’m proud to have been there for them all.

What encouragement would you give to Scotmid members who are looking to become more involved with the Society?

Attend member meetings and see how Scotmid gets involved with the communities we serve.

If there’s one thing you can’t pass by on your local Scotmid shelves, what is it?

Newmains is my local shop but a mile either side is Law and Clelland.  The new bakery concept makes my mouth water every time!

What do you do to relax?

Socialising with friends and listening to music – Andre Rieu and James Last and his orchestra are particular favourites.

What’s been your favourite holiday destination and why?

Orlando, Florida.  It’s a magical place where dreams come true!
