Getting up close with the Scotmid board and committee members continues with John Miller, Scotmid Board & East Regional Committee member.

Why (and how long ago) did you become a member of Scotmid?

I joined the Society in October 1980 and I remember it well because I joined to purchase a colour TV on the interest free scheme (you had to be a member to have this facility)!  I joined in the old Nicholson Street department store.

How and why did you decide to become more actively involved?

I had worked for the Society for some 15 years and believed in our principles of member ownership and wanted to become part of decision making.

What major changes have you seen in your time with Scotmid?

There has been so very many changes over the years!  We now live in a world governed by IT and Scotmid has certainly moved with the times. The Society has grown in many ways with new shops, new businesses and mergers.

What’s been your proudest moment at Scotmid?

My proudest moment was when Scotmid celebrated 150 years serving our members and Scottish communities at an event held in the Garden Lobby within the Scottish Parliament building.

What encouragement would you give to Scotmid members who are looking to become more involved with the Society?

I would encourage members to look at our ethical business model in an era where the capitalist model has failed society in general.

Where is your local Scotmid store?

Roslin is my nearest branch, a superb facility for the village.

If there’s one thing you can’t pass by on the Scotmid shelves, what is it?

I can never pass by Fairtrade Chocolate Boxes, with my sweet tooth!

What do you do to relax?

I enjoyed watching Senior Football and I am on the committee of my local Junior Football Club, Penicuik Athletic. I must stress that sometimes, this is NOT relaxing.

What’s your favourite film of all time?

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.  A classic.

What’s been your favourite holiday destination and why?

I love Santa Eulalia in Ibiza for the sun, sea and sand but also Iona for peace and tranquillity – plus my mobile has no reception on there!
