Getting up close with the Scotmid board and committee members continues with Eddie Thorn, Scotmid East Regional Committee member.
Why (and how long ago) did you become a member of Scotmid?
I joined in 2008. I just wanted to be a member of a successful and well run co-operative.
How and why did you decide to become more actively involved?
After I retired from RBS in 2010 I decided to put myself forward for a place on the East Regional Committee.
What major changes have you seen in your time with Scotmid?
The upgrading of the stores. Here in Edinburgh I have seen a considerable improvement in our stores at Warrender Park, Marchmont Road and Stockbridge, to name just a few. Also, the bakery counters and a better selection of fresh produce.
What’s been your proudest moment at Scotmid?
Seeing the outcomes of the community grants that the committee is responsible for allocating. Sometimes a small grant can make such a big difference.
What encouragement would you give to Scotmid members who are looking to become more involved with the Society?
I readily encourage people to get more involved. Attending the Annual or Ordinary General Meeting to hear more about the Society is a good start.
Where is your local Scotmid store?
Stockbridge, Barnton and Crewe Road North.
If there’s one thing you can’t pass by on the Scotmid shelves, what is it?
A few things – Peach flavoured water, Cadbury’s chocolate and the special deals!
What do you do to relax?
I watch TV or go for a cycle.
What’s your favourite film of all time?
The Godfather.
What’s been your favourite holiday destination and why?
Italy – various locations. I like the Italian people, food, weather and the places.
