Full Name: Edward George Thorn
Length of Society Membership: 4 years
Having served on the East Committee I am keen to be elected onto the Board in order that I may become further involved with the Society.
I have been delighted to be associated with Scotmid and to be part of a successful body with a long standing tradition built on solid co-operative principles and values. Scotmid is a well run business operating from a solid foundation and it is pleasing to be a part thereof.
I am a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland. I spent my entire working life with RBS and retired as a Relationship Director responsible for a number of the Bank’s major customers. This exposed me the strategy and workings of these large businesses. I was the Relationship Manager for Scotmid in the last ten years of my banking career. That experience of the business coupled with the knowledge gained from serving on the East Regional Committee has given me a considerable understanding of the entire Scotmid business.
I am Chair of a social enterprise and Director of two not for profit companies that serve local communities. I am also on the board of Water of Leith Credit Union Steering Group which with the support of The Church of Scotland and Roman Catholic Church is looking to set up a new credit union.
I firmly believe that co-operatives have a vital role in modern society and it is crucial not only to protect and support those in place but support any new initiatives.
